4: The Spaces In-Between

A Venetian Intranet

Most of the architecture in Venice is highly protected: from its grand Palazzi under UNESCO, right down to simple architectural details and uses of materials. As a result, every small space between buildings, every drainpipe, gas supply cover, overhead beam and disused window shutter has become a ‘noticeboard’ for contemporary life. Services are advertised, events are publicized; graffiti tags are contained within socially acceptable and communally held parameters regarding public space. When read as a whole, they also indicate trends in migration, workforce, entertainment and pleasure. There are stories to be heard if we’re able to listen.
